Catalyst Forum: Life Sciences

The second edition of the Catalyst Forum: Life Sciences will once again bring together members of the CENE and its network of successful Boston-based Canadians for a day of discovery, collisions, networking and learning.

This virtual program will include insights into new developments in Canadian life sciences, input from the CENE's Life Sciences Leadership Council and feature a showcase of emerging growth Canadian life sciences companies.  The program will be hosted throughout at a base location in Boston and Canada.

Through a mix of aggressive corporate tax regime, relatively low operation costs, high-quality multilingual talent, and cutting edge university research, the city has reached the top 5 in North America for its concentration of tech jobs. In the ITC sector, companies such as Google, IBM, Facebook, Samsung, Behavox, Ericsson, and many more have opened R&D centers. In life sciences and MedTech, multinational companies such as Merck, Pfizer, Novartis, GE Healthcare, Sandoz, Siemens, among others, have chosen Montréal.

A Toast To Canada Day

This year, we brought Canada Day to your doorstep.  Our celebration included a very special wine tasting carefully curated by Kaskadia Wine Merchants, a raffle of gifts direct from the provinces and we’ll mix things up with a special cocktail shared from Crystal Head Vodka which is manufactured in Newfoundland and Labrador. All net proceeds went directly to the United Way of Canada and the United States.

We were joined by Dave Donabedian, Chief Investment Officer of CIBC Private Wealth Management, Avery Shenfeld, Managing Director and Chief Economist of CIBC Capital Markets, and Karl Moore, Associate Professor of Strategy and Organization at McGill University.

Mentoring the most innovative Canadian founders in life sciences and technology has been CENE’s mission since our founding in 2013. Bringing together over 100 sponsors, founders and investors, the Catalyst Forum focused on identifying and fostering the most promising life sciences companies emerging from Canada today.

We celebrated 152 years of Canada with the CENE, the Canadian Consulate in Boston and the NECBC. This festive gathering showcased a wide range of Canadian innovation, from a fireside chat with Canadian entrepreneurs to in-house demos from Canadian start-ups. Plus, we enjoyed some of our favourite Canadian snacks and beverages.

Scaling the Invisible Wall: Roundtable Discussion with Immigration Attorney Vincent Lau

CENE Members gathered for lunch with fellow Canadians working in tech and life sciences to learn more about the current Canada-U.S. immigration landscape and its influence on business, hiring, and living in the U.S. Our conversation addressed how the current approach to enforcing immigration laws affects cross-border recruitment and considered the impact of potential future legal changes. Immigration attorney Vincent Lau, Managing Partner at Clark Lau LLC, led a presentation outlining challenges Canadians may face and discussed potential solutions.

The 2019 CENE gala was an evening of great networking, conversation, fun and remarkable storytelling from two fellow Canadians whose goals are nothing less than creating clean energy forever to expanding the knowledge boundaries of our universe. Our special guests for the evening were exoplanet hunter Dr. Sara Seager and fusion energy pioneer Dr. Dennis Whyte.

Quarterly Meetup: Bruins vs. Habs

CENE members, including 8-season Bruins alum and CENE member Nevin Markwart, visited a Bruins vs. Habs game in a luxurious private club setting. Gathering at the Legacy Club, founded by former Bruins goalie Cleon Daskalakis, and located in an historic brick-and-beam building near TD Garden, we watched the greatest rivals in sports battle it out.

CENE members and friends of Canada grabbed a drink and met fellow Canadians (and friends of Canada) working in tech, life sciences, and the innovation sector.

BDC Boston Immersion Day

For a second year, CENE teamed up with BDC to explore new ways to scale Canadian innovation. As Canada’s only financial institution devoted exclusively to entrepreneurs, BDC (Business Development Bank of Canada) offers advice and capital to promising Canadian businesses. This October 26th immersion day brought CENE members' collective expertise, connections, and advice to the high-growth firms BDC supports along with a warm introduction to the hub's innovation ecosystem. Members were invited to participate in mini-mentoring sessions according to their expertise. All members were invited to a breakfast session to meet the companies.

CENE Happy Hour with Alberta MedTech

On Wednesday, May 30th the Canadian Entrepreneurs in New England were joined by some of Alberta’s top medical device, diagnostic and HealthIT technologies and companies. Members grabbed a drink and connected with Albertan entrepreneurs and Boston-area Canadian expats working in the life sciences at this intimate networking reception. Drinks and light hors-d'oeuvres were served.

Canadian Entrepreneurs in New England met for our quarterly cinq à sept at Meadhall in Kendall Square, Cambridge. Members were invited to grab a drink with fellow Canadians (and friends of Canada) working in tech, life sciences, and innovation sectors. Cash bar with light hors-d'oeuvres were provided.

Cleantech Founders Evening

Canadian Entrepreneurs in New England (CENE) and the Québec Government Office in Boston hosted “Ideate for Impact: Cleantech Founders Evening” followed by a networking event where Québec’s cleantech companies collided with Boston’s green innovation community and CENE members. We were inspired by these business leaders who are dedicated to having a meaningful, long-term impact.

The CENE Fall Kickoff took place after work on Wednesday, September 13th, with CENE members, Canadian companies, and the Canadian Consulate team reconnecting after the summer to hear what’s new at the CENE. We were excited to share news about new ways to get involved in giving back to the Canadian tech/life science community and ideas for the coming year.
