University of Waterloo
Co-operative Education Program
The University of Waterloo Co-operative Education program offers employers access to students from more than one hundred different academic programs to work on a short-term basis and as a potential pipeline of future full-time hires. The students can work on-premise (pre-COVID-19) or they can work remotely.
The standard co-op work term is four months long with a minimum of 35 hours/week. Due to COVID-19, there is flexibility that lowers the minimum requirements (can be configured multiple ways). Students are treated like any other employer—on-premise or working remotely—assigned work, provided guidance and feedback and compensated. Students can be on a firm’s payroll system, through a third party HR/payroll provider or hired as an independent contractor. Boston area employers who have hired students through the program include Harvard University, MIT, Wayfair, Hubspot, Akamai Technologies and TripAdvisor.
